2019 Specialized Stumpjumper

January, 2019

As the lead designer on the 2019 Specialized Stumpjumper, I worked with a team of product managers, designers, and engineers to create the next evolution of this flagship mountain bike frame.

The Design Legacy of the Stumpjumper

The Stumpjumper has evolved substantially over the years. One key consideration in this project was the continuity of any new design with previous generations.

Project Goals

Aesthetic Inspiration

The mood board below was part of the initial inspiration and research compiled to help define the aesthetic direction for the project.

Sketch Development

Below is a selection of some of the sketch concepts created for the layout of the frame structure. The goal was to create a beautiful and aggressive frame design that utilized minimal material and exhibited all of the ride qualities that has made this bike such a staple in their line.

A full-scale form study was created to refine the complex forms and subtle shaping details of the frame.

This model was created and worked on in parallel to the CAD model development.

Internal Storage

Through rethinking how the user could most easily access the downtube storage compartment we were able to increase the capacity, create a larger opening, and slim down the access door.
